Household Rules a Child Can Memorize and Trust

Household Rules is the spoke where most families already have some version of the work done. You probably have rules. The question is whether they are the right kind, whether they are written down, and whether your child has the ones they can actually hold on to when the room gets loud.

What this strategy is

Household Rules is the fourth spoke in the Personal and Environmental Safety hub. It is the practice of establishing a small number of clear, explained rules for the home, so that the child always knows what the next expectation is and why it is there.

A child carrying trauma needs rules the way a walker on a foggy trail needs markers on the path. Rules are not about compliance. They are about predictability. A short list, written out, explained in plain language, posted somewhere the child can see it, becomes a kind of map the child can return to when their inner weather turns.

The test of a good rule is whether a child who is upset can still remember it. If the rule is too long or too abstract, it will not survive a hard Tuesday. Keep them short. Keep them fair. Say the why out loud.

Why it matters on the trail

Safety is the first wheel for a reason. A child who does not trust the structure of their home cannot do any of the deeper work of healing. Household Rules is the piece that most directly tells the child, "The ground in this house is not going to move under you today." That is the whole point of the Safety wheel, in one sentence.

At the First Climb stage, this is also the spoke that makes the rest of your week sustainable. Clear rules protect the caregiver's nervous system too, and a regulated caregiver is the most important safety feature in the house.

What to try tonight

1. Write down three to five house rules. No more.
2. For each rule, write one sentence of why it exists. Keep it plain. "We put shoes by the door so no one trips."
3. Read the rules out loud with your child once. Just once. Do not quiz them.
4. Post the list somewhere the child can see it, at their eye level.
5. When a rule comes up in the day, point to the paper, not the child. The paper is the authority, not you.
6. Thank the child the first time they remember a rule on their own. Out loud.

When it is working

You will know this is working when the child begins to reference the rules themselves. "I think shoes go by the door." "I am going to the kitchen for a glass of water." They are not reciting. They are using the rules as a script for a world they now trust a little more.

The bigger win is quieter. You will notice fewer power struggles over small things, because the small things have already been decided. You get to be the guide, not the enforcer.

When to get more support

If you find yourself needing to enforce the same rule dozens of times a day for weeks, that is a sign that something else is driving the behavior, and the rules themselves are not the right tool for that moment. Bring it to your child's care team. The same is true if writing the rules creates new arguments or big distress. That is a wheel asking for a softer approach.
