When a child seems to always be watching for danger
Hypervigilance is a body that is still working the night shift. Here is how to help it rest.

They noticed the new picture in the hallway within ten seconds. They track the sound of every car that slows down in front of the house. They ask who is at the door before the doorbell rings. You realized yesterday that they are watching you at dinner the way an air traffic controller watches a radar screen, and it broke something small in your chest.
What's really going on
Hypervigilance is a nervous system that is still working the night shift. Somewhere in the child's past, paying constant attention to the room was the right answer. Maybe a grownup moved suddenly. Maybe a mood in a house meant the next hour was going to be dangerous. Maybe nothing specific happened, but the air was never dependable enough to let the body rest. That level of attention was survival. It was not a symptom. It was a strategy. It worked.
The trouble is that the strategy does not know how to shut off when the room becomes safe. The nervous system is still doing its old job. It scans the house for danger signals the way muscles on a long-held cramp keep holding long after the original threat is gone. The child is not choosing to be wary. Their body has a job and nobody has told it the job is over. What is worse, for many kids, dropping the vigilance feels scary, because the vigilance is what kept them alive. Letting it go feels like letting down a guard dog that saved their life.
There is also the social dimension. A hypervigilant child often reads faces faster than you can recognize your own. They may know you are frustrated before you do. This can feel uncanny, and it can also make the child seem "mature," when really they are exhausted.
You are probably in Landscape or into First Climb. The wheel at the center is Safety, and the rim of that wheel, Trust and Assurance, is the real goal. The hubs doing the work are Personal and Environmental Safety and Secure and Predictable Environment. The spokes at the heart of it are Consistent Routines, Predictable Changes, and Safe Expression. You are not going to outthink a nervous system. You are going to out-steady it.
What to try tonight
Narrate the plan out loud. "We are going to eat dinner. I am going to do dishes. You have some quiet time until bath. Nothing is going to happen in between." Predictability is what lets a scanning body lower its scan rate.
Warn before you move. "I am going to get up now and put these plates in the sink." It sounds over the top until you realize the child's body startled the last six times you stood up. A two-second warning is a gift.
Reduce surprises. Close doors quietly. Announce who is coming over in advance. Do not change plans without narrating the change. Small surprises are a bigger deal for a scanning nervous system than they look.
Offer rest, not entertainment. The hypervigilant body is tired and does not know it. Quiet activities that take up just enough attention to let the body exhale (drawing, puzzles, a familiar show, folding laundry) are often more helpful than a high-stimulation outing.

Questions caregivers ask
Is hypervigilance the same as anxiety?
They overlap. Hypervigilance has a specific flavor: the child is scanning the environment for danger cues rather than worrying about abstract future events. A therapist can help you tell the difference and pick the right supports.
My child notices things I cannot. Is that a gift or a problem?
It is both. Many hypervigilant kids grow into adults with remarkable awareness of people and rooms. The goal is not to erase the skill. It is to make the skill optional instead of compulsory.
Should I tell them not to worry?
No. Telling a scanning body not to worry tells it that it is wrong, which it is not. Its job made sense in the past. Try "I can see your body is watching everything right now. I am here. You can rest. I am on watch for both of us."
What about weighted blankets or compression?
Many hypervigilant kids find deep pressure calming. Weighted blankets (age-appropriate and the right weight), compression shirts, and firm hugs all help some kids. Start with the lowest intensity and watch how the body responds.
Will they ever fully relax?
For most kids, yes, over years of safety. Some keep a low-level scan into adulthood, and that can be okay. What we are looking for is a body that can rest when it needs to, not a body that has lost the skill of noticing.
Is this the same as being "on edge"?
Close. On edge is often temporary and situational. Hypervigilance is a baseline setting. If a child is on edge all the time, that is hypervigilance. Same trail, and the practices are the same.
