When a child acts younger than their age
Regression is not going backward. It is the body asking for something it needed earlier. Here is how to offer it.

The ten-year-old is talking in baby voice again. They want you to cut up their sandwich. They asked if they could sit in your lap, and then they asked if they could have a pacifier, which they did not have at nine, let alone ten. You are watching someone shrink in real time, and it is confusing, and you love them, and you do not know whether to lean in or gently redirect.

What's really going on
Regression is not going backward. It is the body revisiting a developmental moment that did not get everything it needed the first time through. Many children healing from trauma grew up on fast forward, forced to be older than they were so that their survival made sense. The five-year-old who had to soothe a crying parent. The seven-year-old who fed younger siblings. The nine-year-old who had to pretend to be fine. Those kids skipped entire sections of childhood. When they finally feel safe enough, their bodies sometimes roll back the tape and ask for those sections.
What you are seeing is not a character change. It is trust. The child has felt safe enough in your home to let out the younger self that had to stay hidden before. That younger self wants a story, a lap, a soft voice, a sippy cup, a cartoon meant for smaller kids. They are not being manipulative and they are not faking. They are filling in a gap. If the gap gets filled, the child moves forward again with more foundation underneath them.

There is also a stress piece. Regression often shows up at stressful moments: a placement anniversary, a birthday, a school transition, a family visit. Stress pulls the brain toward the earliest available coping tools, and for many kids those tools are attached to younger ages.
Where this sits on the trail
This usually shows up in Plateau. You thought you were past the early work, and now the early work is knocking at the door. What to try tonight
Meet them where they are without a lecture. Cut the sandwich. Let them sit on your lap. Read the picture book they want, even if it is meant for a three-year-old. The younger self is asking for something. Offer it gently and without making it a discussion.
Keep the language warm and steady. Do not say "you are too old for that." Do not tease. Do not negotiate. A simple "come here, I have got you" is almost always the right sentence. The younger self has not heard that sentence enough times yet.
Offer a "small time" ritual. Some families have a set half hour in the evening where it is okay to be little. "From now until the timer goes off, you can be as small as you want." This gives the younger self a container and makes the older self more comfortable about being the older self the rest of the day.
Do not panic about school. If the regression is showing up at home and not at school, that is often a sign the child feels safe enough at home to let down. Let them perform their age at school. Let them rest at home.

They can help you figure out whether the regression is a normal healing sign or whether the stressor driving it needs more attention. They can also help you make peace with the counterintuitive truth that welcoming the baby voice is often exactly how the older voice grows up.
For the next few weeks, meet the young moments with warmth, keep the rest of the day age-appropriate, and notice when the regression softens. It usually does. The younger self does not need to stay little forever. It just needs to know it was welcome.
Questions caregivers ask
Will welcoming regression make it last longer?
Usually no. The opposite tends to be true. When the younger self is welcomed, it gets filled up and moves on. When it is rejected, it goes underground and comes back harder later.
Is it okay to give a ten-year-old a pacifier or bottle?
For many families, in private and for short stretches, yes. Talk with your dentist about dental concerns, and talk with a therapist about how to frame it. It is not unusual, and it is not shameful.
What if the school sees this?
Most of the time, regression stays at home, which is a sign of trust. If it is showing up at school, loop in the teacher and a therapist so the school can meet it with warmth instead of disciplinary language.
My child is embarrassed about regressing. How do I help?
Normalize it out loud. "Sometimes our insides need to be smaller than our outsides for a little while. That is okay here." Say it when they are not in a regressed moment so they can hear it without feeling put on the spot.
Is regression a sign of serious trauma?
It is a sign that the body is holding something from an earlier time, which is true for most kids healing from trauma. It is not, by itself, a sign of emergency. A therapist can help you tell the difference between healing regression and something that needs more support.
When should I worry?
When regression comes with self-harm, severe withdrawal, loss of functioning, or when it does not soften at all over weeks of warmth. Those are signs to loop the care team in. Otherwise, let the younger self be welcomed and watch what happens.
