Building trust with a child who learned adults are unsafe

You told them you would be home at 5:30 and you walked in at 5:34. Nothing was wrong. Traffic. And yet when you opened the door, they were already in their room, and they did not come out for dinner, and you can feel that a small, careful thing got scratched. You wonder how many times you can rebuild this before you wear through something you cannot see.
What's really going on
Trust with a child who learned that adults were unsafe is not a feeling. It is a ledger. Their body keeps a very precise, very unconscious running count of deposits and withdrawals. A promise kept is a deposit. A moment of soft tone is a deposit. A door answered gently when they expected it to be slammed is a deposit. A late arrival, a forgotten thing, a raised voice, a distracted "later," a moment when you seemed different: all withdrawals. The child is not trying to keep score. Their nervous system does it automatically, without permission, because once upon a time the scorekeeping is what kept them ready.
What this means is that trust is not built in big moments. It is built in an enormous number of tiny, boring, reliable ones. The child who was hurt by an adult who was inconsistent does not need you to be extraordinary. They need you to be predictable. The biggest, most heroic, most loving gesture you could make is matched and then some by arriving when you said you would arrive for four months in a row.

Make one tiny promise and keep it exactly. "I am going to bring you a glass of water before I turn off my light." Then do it, at the time you said, with the same tone. Small promises kept land harder than big promises made.
If you are late, name it honestly. "I told you 5:30 and I walked in at 5:34. I am sorry. Here is what happened. I am here now." Do not hand-wave. The child noticed. Acknowledging the gap is itself a deposit.
Use the same words at the same moments. Hello, goodbye, goodnight, I love you, I am proud of you. The sameness is not laziness. It is a tuning fork. A body that has learned to scan adults for fakeness will settle into the sameness over time.
Do not make the trust a project they can see. Do not say "I am trying to build trust with you." Just be the adult. Over time, the ledger quietly rebalances. Trust is like breath: easier to measure by its absence than to watch in motion.

And let yourself have a life outside this. Trust-building work requires a caregiver whose own nervous system is not burned to the floor. Sleep. Eat. See people who love you. Protect one hour a week that is yours. The child does not need you to be unbreakable. They need you to be here.
Questions caregivers ask
How long does it take to build trust?
Months to years, depending on the child and their history. Most families start to see real changes between six and eighteen months of consistent, warm, boring care. Some take longer. The deposits are still counting even when you cannot see them.
What if I broke a promise and they are furious?
Own it, specifically. "I said I would be at the game. I did not come. I broke my word. I am so sorry." Do not explain too much. Do not defend yourself. Ask what would help make it up. Then actually follow through on whatever they name.
Are there ways to speed this up?
Not really. You cannot compress trust the way you can compress learning. You can remove obstacles (too many transitions, inconsistent caregivers, broken routines) and you can do more of the small things. The body still takes its time.
What if I do not fully trust my child either?
That is common and honest, and worth naming with a therapist. Some caregivers have good reasons for a slow return to trust. The goal is not to fake trust you do not have. The goal is to stay warm while you figure out what you actually feel.
Is it okay to tell the child I am proud of them?
Yes, and keep it specific. "I saw you try that again when it was hard. I am proud of you." Specific praise lands better than general praise for a kid who has been scanning for empty words.
What about trust around older siblings or extended family?
Trust is built one relationship at a time. The same rules apply to every adult in the child's life. This is why the Nurturing Network matters so much: every trustworthy adult is another brick. Every unreliable adult is another withdrawal. Protect the child from adults who cannot be steady.
